Reflexology is an alternative, therapeutic method that minimises or relieves the individual from pain. The therapist is activating specific body areas through massage and by applying the right amount of pressure. Reflexology is based on the premise that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands that correspond to all of the glands, organs, and parts of the body. By applying pressure in specific parts of the body, the therapist can bring the patient’s body back to balance and turn his/ her (the patient’s) body into a ‘therapist’ itself.
Hyperemia emerges through the hand and foot massage, which improves the blood circulation. This relaxation also affects the autonomic response, which, in turn, affects the immune system. Reflexology can ease or stop the physical pain (i.e.: headaches, migraines). According to research, through regular reflexology sessions, the levels of stress and anxiety may be reduced.
According to a research study on the potential benefits of reflexology and symptom relief in cancer patients, an average of 31% of UK patients use some form of complementary therapy, such as reflexology(Reflexology for Symptom Relief in Patients With Cancer των Wilkinson et all 2008). Many patients living with cancer experience anxiety, and 75% of patients with advanced cancer experience pain (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1994). Patients must manage their anxiety and pain as chronic problems.
